Medical Breakthrough Advances In Health Research During 2018

There were many medical breakthrough advances in 2018. Let’s review several and what they do to actually improve our health.

 

Medical Breakthrough: Fasting Diets

It’s really interesting, folks. Obesity is a major epidemic here in the United States, but “diets” were among the top internet searches in 2018.

Literally, not a day goes by without a new diet book/video coming on to the market. Yet, Americans are growing fatter by the day.

The latest diet fad is called intermittent fasting.

In a study that appeared in the journal Nutrition and Healthy Aging earlier this year, scientists confirmed that study participants lost 3% of their weight by the end of the 12 weeks experiment.

The intermittent diet also lowered blood pressure.  The 16 hour fast period burns fat rather than sugars, which is converted into energy. Metabolic rate increases and you burn more calories.

Follow up studies are planned to assess whether participants can maintain this diet over a longer time span than 12 weeks.

 

Medical Breakthrough: Cancer Research

In 2018, 9.6 million people died due to cancer-related causes, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). This makes cancer research one of the top priorities worldwide.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine reported this medical breakthrough. They  developed a brand new blood test called CancerSEEK.

This test is highly sensitive and can detect eight types of cancer; — breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, and esophageal cancer. Accuracy rates are high.

The test’s highest accuracy rate is in detecting ovarian cancer. The accuracy rate is 98%.

The blood test identifies specific cancer bio-markers, such as genetic mutations, and proteins associated with different types of cancer.

Medical Breakthrough: Baking Soda Is Effective Against Arthritis

In 2018, scientists turned their focus towards reassessing old remedies for other conditions.

 

Take baking soda for heartburn, of course. But, a study also found that baking soda is effective against heartburn. It works by decreasing inflammation in the kidneys, spleen, and blood vessels. The baking soda prevents adverse reactions to heavy foods, and thereby reduces inflammation..

 

Medical Breakthrough: Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia

Several studies found that medications currently used to treat the herpes virus can also lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are neuro-degenerative illnesses conditions that manifest after the age of 65.

Scientists reported lowering the dementia risk by a factor of 10.
